Charging equipment

Everything that gets electricity into the car — from the cable in the trunk to the box on the garage wall.

Level 1 — NACS (Tesla plug)

Portable cables for cars with a NACS inlet, running off an ordinary 120 V outlet. Slow — roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — but the cable lives in the trunk and works anywhere there is a socket.

We recommend

Tesla Mobile Connector

Portable, and not only Level 1: on the bundled NEMA 5-15 it trickles from any household outlet, but swap in the NEMA 14-50 adapter and it moves to a 240 V circuit — closer to home-charger speed from a cable that still lives in the trunk.

  • NACS
  • 120 V via NEMA 5-15
  • 240 V via NEMA 14-50
  • Swappable plug adapters

Level 1 — J1772

Portable cables for cars with a J1772 inlet, on an ordinary 120 V outlet. Roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour: genuinely enough overnight if your daily drive is short.

We recommend

Lectron Level 1 EV Charger

A longer, sturdier take on the emergency cable that came with the car — 16 ft of reach and ETL certified. At its full 15 A it belongs on a dedicated 20 A circuit, not one shared with the kitchen.

  • J1772
  • 110 V, 15 A (1.65 kW)
  • NEMA 5-15 plug
  • 16 ft cable

Level 2 — NACS (Tesla plug)

For cars with a NACS inlet: Teslas, plus newer models from GM, Ford, Rivian and others that have switched. If your car came with a Tesla-style port, buy from this shelf.

We use this

Tesla Wall Connector

Sold by Tesla but not Tesla-only: with a NACS plug it charges any NACS car directly, and a J1772 adapter covers the rest. A sensible pick for a two-car household where one car has already switched.

  • Hardwired, outdoor-rated

Level 2 — J1772

For cars with a J1772 inlet, which is most non-Tesla EVs sold before the NACS switch. If you know your car as a “CCS car”, this is still your shelf: CCS1 describes the DC fast-charging plug, and at home those same cars charge over J1772.

We recommend

ChargePoint Home Flex

Adjustable amperage is the reason to pick this one: set it to whatever your circuit can safely carry today, and raise it later if you upgrade the panel — instead of buying a second charger.

  • J1772
  • Hardwired, indoor or outdoor
  • Adjustable 16–50 A
